Psychological adaptation to climate variability and environmental threats represents a critical yet understudied dimension of risk management and resilience in high-mountain populations. This study, built with an exploratory empirical design, integrates geographical, climatic, and psychological approaches to analyze the relationships between climate perception, psychosocial characteristics, and adaptive potential among indigenous communities in the Ecuadorian Andes. Study areas are located in two representative highland sites: the southern flanks of Chimborazo volcanic complex and the basin of San Pablo lake in Imbabura Province. The research involved 3 ethnocultural groups of indigenous communities: Puruhá, Kayambi, and Otavalo populations belonging to the Kichwa nationality of the Andean region. Data were collected through structured questionnaires on climate perception and its impact in productive activities, psychometric techniques assessing psychosocial adaptation (self-portrait, "Who am I?" test, Janoff-Bulman's Basic Assumptions Scale, Luscher Color Test), psychosomatic symptom surveys, and geographic GIS-supported analysis of spatial dynamics (multitemporal analysis of settlement patterns, road networks, and land use). Spatial analyses revealed contrasting dynamics between the study areas: expansion of the agricultural frontier and more intensive land use in Chimborazo, versus relatively stable land-use patterns with increased eucalyptus plantations and densified secondary road networks in the basin of San Pablo lake. Comparisons of instrumentally measured climatic data with local perceptions of climate variability demonstrated that precipitation variability and irregular seasonal patterns were the most outstanding changes experienced by communities. Psychosocial assessments showed generally adequate energy levels and resilience potential across groups, although higher neuropsychological tension and vulnerability indicators were identified among Kayambi and Otavalo respondents. Cluster analyses further differentiated subgroups with varying adaptive capacities and risk profiles. The findings highlight that adaptive potential in high-mountain indigenous populations emerges from the interaction between environmental exposure, territorial dynamics, cultural cosmovision, and individual psychological resources. Results of multicultural comparative analysis indicate that most of the participants perceive climate variability and recognize its influence on agricultural productivity and food security, although perception typologies differ significantly across ethnocultural groups and altitudinal zones. Four perception types were identified (internal, external, internal–external, and inconsistent) reflecting different cognitive and experiential vectors in understanding environmental change. Among Puruhá communities, inconsistent perception is predominant, Kayambi respondents showed a strong tendency toward external perception, and Otavalo populations displayed more heterogeneous distributions. These perception patterns were associated with distinct configurations of basic beliefs about the benevolence and justice of the world, perceived personal control, and the role of randomness of events, suggesting culturally mediated pathways of psychological adaptation. The study underscores the importance of incorporating psychosocial and perceptual dimensions into climate change adaptation strategies, particularly in culturally diverse and ecologically fragile regions.
